Attempts to create a club competition encompassing all Group 9 teams commenced in the 1920s. Distance, costs and preoccupation with cup football (mainly the Maher Cup) delayed an inter-club competition until 1933.
Prior to then most towns had a ‘sub-league’ where various local teams would compete, and then would draw representatives from these various teams for a combined Cup team.
In 1930 a Southwestern Competition was formed covering towns and some villages from Grenfell to Harden and Cowra to Young. While initially a success with crowds it couldn’t be sustained during the Depression. Similarly the combined Group 9 and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area competition of 1933, divided into eastern and western divisions, only lasted two years. In 1938 the revived competition excluded the MIA teams.

Played in mud on Sunday 30 July; gate £29/10. Temora kept four quality players out, reserving them for the expected Maher Cup clash with Young on Wednesday. Although they had lost the Maher Cup to Cowra the previous Wednesday they lodged and won a protest. However it was soon reversed and the gambit was futile.
